A Transitional Independent Living (TIL) Residence for Runaway & Homeless Youth

The Mission and Goal of the Thaddeus G. Whitley Residence:

AAPCI’s goals and objectives are to build on New York City’s expansion of residential services for youth who are runaway and homeless, and to provide appropriate supports for LGBTQ youth, including the following:

• To protect and address the needs of youth who are runaway and homeless, reuniting them with their families, whenever possible. When reunification is not a realistic option, the goal is to help youth progress toward stability, economic self‐sufficiency, and successful independent living.
• To ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all RHY regardless of culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, background, or status, including young parents, victims of abuse, and youth involved with the criminal or juvenile justice system.
• To provide services infused with the principles of positive youth development, offering participants activities and experiences that help them to identify their goals and aspirations and develop into healthy, responsible, and resilient adults.
• To facilitate access to essential resources through an effective system of linkages and referrals.
• To improve relationships among program participants, their peers, families, and community members with the goal of helping youth develop networks of support.

The Thaddeus G. Whitley Residence seeks to offer 24 homeless youth (regardless of race, culture, religion, ethnic background, or sexual preference) the opportunity to reside in a secured environment for up to eighteen (18) months or more, as needed. The program is culturally sensitive to allow youth to feel immediately at home and to foster ethnic pride.

Support Services:

Some supportive services at the Thaddeus G. Whitley Residence will include: comprehensive assessment, case management, referrals to behavioral health services, educational and vocational counseling, life skills and family reunification coaching and a full range of additional supportive services for youth.
