Domestic Violence Initiatives

Serenity House Family Residence

Serenity House Family Residence, a transitional Tier II residence, which began in 2005, provides 40 independent living apartments for homeless survivors of domestic violence and their dependent children. Serenity House is one of the very few domestic violence shelters in New York City which accepts male victims of domestic violence with their dependent children. Program residents are referred to the facility by NYC HRA’s Office of Domestic Violence and Emergency Intervention Services (ODVEIS). The program’s goal is to prepare residents for independent living within or outside the community. The maximum length of stay is generally limited to six months. The program provides case management services, mental health counseling and referrals, housing placement assistance, job search assistance, substance abuse support services, infant and child care services, as well as after school program services. Renee Steedley Family Residence

Named after the late Renee Steedley of the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS), the Renee Steedley Family Residence, is a transitional Tier II domestic violence residence which opened in 2017. The facility provides 54 independent living apartments for homeless survivors of domestic violence and their dependent children. Similar to Serenity House, the Renee Steedley residence  is one of the very few domestic violence shelters in New York City which accepts male victims of domestic violence and their dependent children. Program residents are referred to the facility by NYC HRA’s Office of Domestic Violence and Emergency Intervention Services (ODVEIS). The program’s goal is to prepare residents for independent living within or outside the community. The maximum length of stay is generally limited to six months.
