Emergency Housing Resources In New York City

NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) – A DHS guiding principle states that all homeless individuals and families deserve safe, temporary shelter and that planning for permanent housing should begin immediately. New York City provides shelter to families that have no permanent or temporary place to live.

NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) – The New York City Human Resources Administration/ Department of Social Services (HRA/DSS) provides temporary help to individuals and families with social service and economic needs to assist them in reaching self-sufficiency.

NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development– (HPD) The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is the largest municipal developer of affordable housing in the nation.

The HIV/AIDS Services Administration – (HASA) NYC’s HIV & AIDS Services Administration (HASA) provides emergency, transitional, permanent housing assistance. HASA assists individuals living with AIDS or HIV illness to live healthier, more independent lives. The program can help clients with individualized service plans to target necessary benefits and provide support that is specific to their medical situation and that will enhance their well-being. HASA clients receive ongoing case management and are assigned to a caseworker at one of our HASA centers, located in all 5 boroughs. 

Since August 29, 2016, New Yorkers no longer need an HIV-related illness to receive HASA services. All NYC residents with HIV or AIDS who meet financial need requirements are eligible.

NYC Housing Resource Center – The New York Housing Resource Center (HRC) for people with intellectual / developmental disabilities (I/DD) is a central depository for housing-related services and resources for people with I/DD.
