Families With Dependent Children
Emergency Shelter For Homeless Families With Children
Opened on September 1, 2024, AAPCI operates JFK Hotel 94, a family emergency shelter. Contracted with the NYC Department of Homeless Services (“DHS”) AAPCI provides social support services to 110 homeless families and their dependent children.
JFK Hotel 94 operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Achieving housing stability is often the first step to addressing the underlying causes of homelessness, including behavioral health substance use issues, domestic violence, and intergenerational poverty.
All families are referred to the program by city agencies. AAPCI works very closely with the NYC Department of Homeless Services (“DHS”) and the NYC Human Resources Administration (“HRA”) to accept referrals.
The goal of AAPCI’s family shelter in commercial hotel settings is to provide safe, temporary housing with the goal of moving all families out of shelter and to help them locate permanent and/or alternate housing within or outside the State of New York. Our methodology is to offer on- and off-site supportive case management and permanent housing services which empower our clients and reduce recidivism. Additionally, the program is geared toward homeless families who need assistance in overcoming barriers to permanent housing, registering their children in neighborhood schools, and overcoming barriers to job retention. Families are educated on economic self-sufficiency, and provided the tools needed to be self resilient; as well as how to find and maintain permanent housing.
Services are tailored to finding affording housing, address barriers to gainful employment, and provide assistance accessing public benefits, whenever possible.
During their stay in shelter, each family is housed in a semi-furnished room. The rooms are equipped with a bathroom and shower stall, cribs (as needed), queen-size bed (as needed), clean pillows, sheets, blankets, lockers, and a writing desk. All families are provided three catered meals daily.
Each family has access to onsite social support services to address the concrete causes of their homelessness. Families are encouraged to reunite with their extended families, when possible.
AAPCI works collaboratively with leased-hotel management staff to maintain safe, clean, and secure facilities. All our contracted programs receive unannounced site visits/inspections from NYC DHS and/or NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (“OTDA”) inspectors, as well as visits from AAPCI’s own management staff. They visit to see, firsthand, the conditions of our facilities, to ensure that we are in full compliance with city and state regulations which govern the oversight of hotel shelters, and to ensure that residents are receiving mandated social services, as per our contractual obligations.
The shelter is overseen by a Program Director, Director of Social Services, and Case Manager Supervisors. Counseling staff include bilingual Case Managers, Board of Education liaison, Childcare and Recreation Specialists, whenever possible. Additional staffing include a Housing/Entitlement Specialist and an Employment Specialist. Support service staff include Shift Supervisors, Residential Aides. Security guard services is provided by contracted security personnel.
