Carmen Rubin supports Bucks for Books
In April 2021, we started our summer Bucks for Books literacy campaign to raise money to buy books not only for the children in our domestic violence shelters, but also for the adults in our Single Adult Commercial Hotel Shelters. As an organization, we understand the importance of reading, not just from a developmental and educational standpoint, but from an enjoyment perspective too.
We have now extended this campaign to run indefinitely as the need for books is year-round.
In support of Bucks for Books, we were delighted to host acclaimed children’s author, Carmen Rubin, at our Bronx-based domestic violence shelter, Renee Steedley Family Residence, for a meet and greet with children and staff on August 24th, 2021.
Ms. Rubin entertained everyone with a reading and a peppermint treasure hunt. All of our younger residents received a goodie bag and a signed copy of one of Ms. Rubin’s books.
We are so excited to be able to welcome Ms. Rubin back to Serenity House, our second domestic violence shelter in Brooklyn, on September 9th, 2021.
Our campaign is really gaining momentum with the added generous donation of dozens of children’s books by the BlaQue Resource Network. These books are being added to our lending library, with the hope that our kids will make reading a part of their everyday lives.
