AIDS FACTS
in Cote D'Ivoire
- Cote
D'Ivoire with a population of 15.6 million people is reported
to have the highest rate of HIV infection in West Africa.
- The
life expectancy in Cote D'Ivoire in 2005 is estimated to be
19 percent lower than it would have been in the absence of
AIDS.
- Over
32,000 children under the age of 15 years are reported to
be living with HIV/AIDS.
- By
age 15, over one-third of girls are reported to be having
sexual intercourse.
- The
number of AIDS orphans is reported to be over 420,000 children.
- According
to officials, about 43 percent of women and young girls in
Cote D'Ivoire have undergone Female Genital Mutilation which
places them at greater risks of HIV infection due to the unhygienic
conditions around the practice.
