What
is a nonprofit organization, anyway?
A nonprofit organization is not a company that's having trouble
making ends meet. It's a type of organization to which the
government has granted tax-exempt status. Think of nonprofit
organizations as the ones that work to help local and/or global
communities, people or the environment. In a nutshell, nonprofit
organizations exist to serve a purpose of public or mutual
benefit other than the pursuit or accumulation of profits.
Nonprofit
organizations exist in one form or another in almost every
community in the world. They are also known as charities or
charitable organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs),
voluntary organizations and community-based organizations
(CBOs). Many nonprofit organizations respond to natural disasters,
serve in war ravaged areas, feed the hungry around the world,
house the homeless, address human rights issues or work on
environmental issues.
You
see them everywhere. Here are a few examples of nonprofit
organizations that might be working in your community:
"Non" "Profit"?
Whereas
businesses develop products to make money, the ultimate aim
of a nonprofit organization is not to make money (they are
"non" "profit"), but to help improve the
quality of life in the community they work in or serve. To
support themselves, nonprofit organizations such as the African
American Planning Commission rely on contributions
and donations from businesses, foundations and people
like you.
What
types of jobs are available at nonprofit organizations? All
types. Nonprofit organizations need bookkeepers, managers,
clerical staff, fundraisers, membership and volunteer coordinators,
public relations practitioners and many other positions. No
matter what your background, you can find a match for your
skills and experience at a nonprofit organization. Over 2
million nonprofit organizations exist in the United States
alone, employing over 12 million
people.
